Cashmere
Cashmere should be worn more than once or twice between cleanings, because too much cleaning causes the delicate fibers to deteriorate quicker. Different types of cashmere garments require different methods of cleaning. Knit cashmere is better suited for hand washing, because the chemicals used in dry cleaning can be especially hard on its fibers. Dry cleaning is usually suggested for woven cashmere as they can lose their body more easily after repeated washings. Dry cleaning is recommended for removing stains, even on knit cashmere.
There are very specific instructions for hand washing cashmere. Cashmere needs to be washed in lukewarm water using either cashmere shampoo or a very mild soap. Swish the garment gently in the sudsy water, avoid rubbing the garment too harshly as that can cause pilling and even shrinkage. Do not twist or wring the garment after it is washed. Remove excess water lightly with a large thick towel and lay the garment on a flat surface away from sunlight or other heat sources to dry. Pills on the garment can easily be removed once it is dry by using a cashmere comb or simply picking them off ever so gently by hand.
Cashmere should always be folded and never hung on a hanger. Cashmere is very susceptible to insect infestations so make sure to include plenty of cedar blocks within its storage area. Tightly sealed containers or trunks are recommended for longer periods of storage.
