Leather

Leather is susceptible to spotting from water and other liquids, therefore brand new leather garments must first be treated to prevent permanent stains from setting in. Treatment sprays are used for this purpose, but make sure to spot test an inconspicuous area of your garment first to see if color changes or other problems should occur. If no problems resulted, treat the entire area of the garment.

Leather must continuously be cared for in order to maintain its vitality. It must not be kept in places that are either too dry or too humid. It has to be be conditioned with waxes or oils in order to prevent it from drying out or cracking. However too much conditioning can also damage the leather by clogging its pores so that it loses the ability to let air in and moisture out. If the leather garment becomes wet, allow it to air dry. Never place it near sources of heat. If salt stains appear, dampen the area with a little water and let it air dry. Follow the process with proper leather treatments.

Remember to only use products that are specified for treating leather. Leather jackets or coats should be hung in the closet with wide padded hangers. Never place your leather garments in plastic bags for longer periods of storage. Leather must be able to breathe, so make sure it is kept in a ventilated area.
