Pearl

Pearls are very delicate, but they can last a lifetime if cared for properly. When wearing pearls, remember to keep them out of direct sunlight and avoid any source of heat. They can easily dehydrate in these types of situations, which causes them to become brittle and crack. Perspiration can also damage pearls, it actually cause the pearls to lose its luster over time. To prevent build up, wipe the pearls with either a dry or damp cloth after wearing them.

Pearls that become dirty can be cleaned with a special pearl jewelry cleaner or simply with a mild soap and water. Do not use abrasive jewelry cleaners that are not meant for pearls. Using a soft bristled brush to clean pearls is also not recommended. Brushing pearls can wear away the nacre coating, which will cause it to look dull. Make sure your pearl jewelry is not kept in contact with water for too long. Water easily weakens the silk or nylon thread that is used to string the pearls together. After it is cleaned, lay your pearl jewelry flat on a towel. If you have a pearl necklace that is strung, do not hang it to dry as that causes the string to stretch.

Keep your pearl jewelry away from your other jewelry. Pearls are very susceptible to scratching so store them separately. Pearls need to be stored in a ventilated area. Remember to take them out of storage every once in a while since pearls need to breathe. If you wear a pearl necklace often, it is a good idea to have them restrung annually.
